Since October 2018 I have been working with some lovely ladies who attend an over 50’s dance class at the United Reformed Church in Roker. Linda the dance teacher kindly allowed me to get involved with the class. I started off taking photos experimenting with long exposures, particularly focusing on movement. I then got the images printed onto satin silk into individual scarves to represent each person who attended the class. With the scarves we then adapted one of Linda’s dance routines to suit the object. My aim was to show the ladies uniting together as a community from attending the dance classes and thought this was best shown by sewing the scarves together, to create a banner signifying the unity. A craft class was held on 13/03/2019 where I sewed the scarves together with Neil, Helen and Linda. I have displayed the banner in the little Community Hall where the dance class takes place, as well as a digital collage of the dance which is displayed in a noticeboard outside the church with the hope that more people will enter the Church and discover the amazing activities which are provided by Roker Life– a combination of Forget me knot, Social chef and the URC.
